7 common PLAB 2 mistakes (and how to avoid them)
Most PLAB 2 fails aren't about knowledge — they're about avoidable consultation errors. Here are seven of the most common, and how to fix them.
- Interrogating instead of listening. Open, then pause. Let the patient talk before you narrow down.
- Skipping ICE. Not asking about ideas, concerns and expectations loses easy interpersonal marks.
- Forgetting to safety-net. Always say what to watch for and when to seek help.
- Jargon overload. Translate everything into plain language and check understanding.
- Running out of time. Practise with a timer so 8 minutes feels normal, not panic-inducing.
- Missing red flags. Actively screen for and verbalise the dangerous diagnosis.
- Reciting doses. Refer to the BNF/local protocol by name instead — it's safer and expected.
The fix for all seven: rehearsal
