7 common PLAB 2 mistakes (and how to avoid them)

Most PLAB 2 fails aren't about knowledge — they're about avoidable consultation errors. Here are seven of the most common, and how to fix them.

  1. Interrogating instead of listening. Open, then pause. Let the patient talk before you narrow down.
  2. Skipping ICE. Not asking about ideas, concerns and expectations loses easy interpersonal marks.
  3. Forgetting to safety-net. Always say what to watch for and when to seek help.
  4. Jargon overload. Translate everything into plain language and check understanding.
  5. Running out of time. Practise with a timer so 8 minutes feels normal, not panic-inducing.
  6. Missing red flags. Actively screen for and verbalise the dangerous diagnosis.
  7. Reciting doses. Refer to the BNF/local protocol by name instead — it's safer and expected.

The fix for all seven: rehearsal
