Managing exam-day nerves for PLAB 2 / PRES 3
Nerves are normal in an OSCE — the goal isn't to eliminate them but to stop them derailing your consultations.
Prepare so the structure is automatic
The best anti-anxiety tool is over-learned structure. If your opening and framework are automatic, you'll fall back on them even when adrenaline hits.
Reset between stations
Each station is independent. If one goes badly, leave it at the door — examiners score them separately. A slow breath and your standard opening line resets you.
Use a calm opening ritual
The same first 20 seconds every time — introduce yourself, confirm the patient, open question — gives your brain a runway.
Look after the basics
Sleep, food, hydration, and arriving early matter more than a last-minute cram. The night before, do a light review, not a panic.
Rehearse under pressure beforehand
Nerves shrink with exposure. Practising timed stations in advance makes the real thing feel familiar. Try a timed-feel station free to build that muscle.
General wellbeing and exam guidance — not medical advice. Seek support from your GP or supervisor if anxiety is affecting you.
